Sangay

Access level: low.

An essay on the study of Sangay's past, written by Seeker Grigio.

Seekers of the Order are accustomed to being met with clicks of triggers. It was only after I had discharged my own weapons that it was possible to arrange an interview with the leader of that group.

— Who are you looking for?! — the young leader glared at me with one eye. Hearing Sangay's name, he grew gloomy. — He's not here. And he won't be. Ever. Banished after what he did. I hope the Wasteland is eating his bones!

It took a long time to explain that I wasn't a firestarter or a raider. Upon being convinced that I was from the Order, the leader changed anger to mercy.

— He was one of ours, Sangay. Not just one of ours… He was a commander, the best of them all. Strong, sensible… He did what he did anyway. Betrayed us, didn't listen, and how it turned out!..

I remember the glimmer of flame dancing on the storyteller's face as his jaw clenched.

— That trip was stupid. It wasn't worth the risk, but those raiders hit Sangay, scratched his pride like paint! We told him that they had five times more men, and their weapons were better... He wouldn't listen. We came at night. Our one chance was if we jumped past the sentries, slaughtered everyone in the night, but Sangay didn't want to. He shouted that he called their leader, that no one would dare insult him!

The leader spit on the ground and sighed bitterly.

— He was always like that. Believed we were special, that the Wasteland led him and all of us. But that time... We lost. He survived, me and a couple of the guys did too. I still don't know why they didn't kill him. They probably wanted him to see what he had done... And now Sangay's gone to the Firestarters, I think. That's where he belongs! He's not a leader. He's a traitor. Betrayed us all...

Later I learned a lot about Sangay, about his service to Odegon, but that story told at a bonfire by the one-eyed fighter, gave me the answer to a question. What made a great fighter into a dog willing to do the bloodiest thing.
